Course overview & description

Overview:  This in-person course will present an overview of the human skeleton and major muscles, as they pertain to figure drawing and sculpture. It is designed for beginning to advanced art students, and open to high school, college, and adult age groups.

Description:  This is a college level “certificate” course, created for artists that are interested in building their knowledge of anatomy.  It will make an impact in your artwork, from figurative art to automotive design, to graphic design, to UX design, digital marketing,  or any area of art study.  This course gives students an opportunity to gain an understanding of anatomy, that artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Cadmus, and numerous current artists, have learned is essential to the health of ones artistic career. This 25 week class includes detailed step-by-step drawing demonstrations of the complete skeleton and major muscles. Students create their own anatomy sketchbook while drawing from lectures, texts, and live models. In addition, each student will create a 15” figure sculpture, depicting the skeleton and muscles of the human figure. This 3D sculpture along with the anatomy sketchbook, gives students an unrivaled figure anatomy experience. Students receive a “certificate” of completion at the end of the course.

Course breakdown:  The first half of this course will focus on the skeleton, with detailed drawing lecture demonstrations    of the axial skeleton, upper and lower appendicular. The second half of the course will focus on the major muscles of the head, torso, legs, and arms, allowing students an opportunity to learn how to add them to the skeleton, and apply this information to their personal figure drawings, paintings, and inventive figure characters & creatures. Emphasis will be placed on proportion and structure, helping students to build with confidence.  Each week, students will work in their anatomy sketchbook, adding drawings of individual bones, investigating their shape and form, while being encouraged to experiment with a variety of media including, pencil, charcoal, colored pencils, watercolor, pastel, digital drawing tools, and more. As students learn a two dimensional approach through drawing, they will then have a three dimensional experience, sculpting each week, applying their knowledge of the skeleton and muscles to a 15” wire armature, using sculpey clay.  Class time will be dedicated to working on the sketchbook and sculpture, having access to expert instruction, textbooks, and completed examples of the finished works. A course syllabus will be provided along with a materials list.
